Magic show, Microgarden, Microbiology and More
By Karyn Houston
Plant & Microbial Biology
The Department of Plant and Microbial Biology will be participating in UC Berkeley's Cal Day on Saturday April 18, 2015. PMB students and faculty will be presenting and hosting all sorts of activities that revolve around plants and microbes. Cal Day is one of the ways PMB interacts with the Berkeley community and future Golden Bears and their families. From 9 am to 4 pm, visit PMB at the Genetics and Plant Biology lawn, located next to Pat Brown's grill on the UC Berkeley campus, north side.
PMB Cal Day Activities
Ice Nucleation Show
Renowned Plant Biologist Steve Lindow will demonstrate ice nucleation, a phenomenon where bacteria cause ice crystals to quickly form on plants.
PMB Info Table
Learn about undergraduate majors and research opportunities while interacting with scientists, professors, and students.
Microgarden
Explore Cal's Microgarden, home to a diverse collection of algae and fungi used in research labs and classrooms around campus. Examine our organisms under microscopes, and learn all about algae and fungi.
Microbiology Student Group
Learn all about Microbes. MSG will unravel how microbes are everywhere, from the deepest crevices in our bodies, to the food that enters our body, and especially in the environments we live in. We often know about "bad" microbes - the germs that make us sick. But what about the "good" microbes? How do microbes benefit people and positively shape the world around us?
Plant Student Group
Learn about Plants. Join plant biology graduate students for fun eductional activities like learning where common foods come from, demonstrations on how to use a dichotomous key to identify plants, and using magnifying lenses to closely view different plant structures.
